How was the /usr/src/linux/.config generated? If you used make oldconfig, that would explain it. The 32- and 64-bit source trees were merged after 2.6.19, and the configuration switches needed were not present in the old configuration. I'm running on P4 so I see the following: $ grep -e CONFIG_X86_[0-9] /usr/src/linux/.config CONFIG_X86_32=y # CONFIG_X86_64 is not set If you don't see the reverse I'd suggest running make menuconfig and fixing the processor type there.
