Description Rick Nas 2002-04-24 17:41:56 UTC
I would really like to install your distribution, however at the moment I can't
even get the CD to boot on my system.

I have a Diamond Fireport 40 SCSI card with a Plextor CDROM and CDR driver. The
fireport 40 originally didn't boot cd's at all, but a bios update fixed that
for the most part. It now supposedly boots cd that adhere to the El Torino
(spelling?) format. It is known that it will not boot all bootable cd's,
however I have both Redhat and Mandrake cd's that it will boot. The gentoo cd
however, it will not boot. I have tested the cd on a different computer and it
is fine, so that's not the problem.

I realize that this is a problem that doesn't affect to many people, but it is
totally preventing me from trying your distribution. I do not know how much
work it is to make the install cd according to this standard, but I would
really appreciate it if you would look into it.

Thanks in advance,

Rick Nas

P.S. I would really appreciate an email telling me whether or not you will even
consider fixing this...

You know what else you might do? Get a couple of floppies and throw mininux on
them from mininux.free.fr, and then boot with that. Once you are in there, you
can mount the CD, create a chroot environment, mount the CD in that environment,
and you're all set to follow the rest of the installation guide. I realise that
is not quite the solution you were after, but it is something that will
immediately let you test gentoo :) There is, I believe, a document on
www.gentoo.org (left hand margin links) for alternate install methods :)

Rick: please see the comment attached to your bug report.

Daniel .. the isolinux guy wont assist here ? Or that not the problem ?
Comment 4 Mark Guertin 2002-10-05 10:53:39 UTC
AFAIK the new live CD should be fine for this, as it follows the El Torito (sp?)
format, provided the drivers for the scsi card are in the kernel. Just
speculation as my main x86 machine is outta comission ATM ...

H. Please try the latest test CD at
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/livecd-basic-x86-2002121700.iso
and see if it works for you. There have been significant updates/improvements
to the CD since you first reported this bug that may have resolved this issue
(or not). Please post success/failure here.

i have a toshiba laptop 4070 CDT, and the experimental livecd doesn't boot on my machine. these laptops are known for this problem with isolinux but with the older cd's 1.4rc1 and older, i just had to wait a minute for isolinux to time out and assume the sector size and than it would boot.

now it just gives an error like "failed, press return to try again" which reboots my machine and prevents me to boot from the cd.

please try -rc4
Comment 8 Martin Holzer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-25 14:42:06 UTC
db issue
Comment 9 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:24:59 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
