The guide says: 
"Starting with version 0.4.0-r1, the vpnc ebuild will test whether TUN/TAP support is enabled. If not, enable it in your kernel config either as module or built-in, recompile and reboot."

You can strike that paragraph out as the ebuild does not check for it anymore.  Thanks.
