In overlays there are usually experimental programs. Sometimes the version x.y.z_beta3 works for me and x_y_z_beta4. However I am unable to come back to beta3 in most convinient way but I have to copy the ebuild from old version of overlay since it has been already removed.
If the ebuilds would be longer in overlay I could simply add it to /etc/portage/package.mask.
