The SMP kernel in the 1.4rc4 installation CDs appears to have a significantly different configuration to the non-smp ("gentoo") kernel. In my case it is unable to detect the IDE disks attached to my HPT370 controller since the appropriate support does not appear to have been compiled into the kernel. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the system from the 1.4rc4 CD. Actual Results: Disks attached to the HPT370 disk are not detected. Expected Results: Disks should be detected (the non-smp kernel finds them OK). Am installing Gentoo using non-smp kernel, however this is increasing the installation time by a considerable amount!
the smp kernel is a 2.4.21_pre kernel which had alot of additional drivers/fixes. It just so happens that it also broke hpt. Sorry that smp doesnt work. Glad first kernel does :) will fix.
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
