$ aplay -Dpulse file.wav
ALSA lib pcm.c:2106:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so
aplay: main:546: audio open error: No such file or directory

When using the pulseaudio package with alsa, I get the error as shown above. Installing alsa-plugins with USE=pulseaudio installs the missing library. Pulseaudio should depend on alsa-plugins when USE=alsa is set.

No, USE=alsa for PulseaAudio means that PulseAudio will use ALSA... if you want ALSA to use PulseAudio you install the correct package.

It would be like having USE=kde on xorg ...
