Currently using: sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r1 x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2 kde-base/kde-3.1.1a net-www/phoenix-bin-0.5 When trying to do certain searches with Phoenix on Google, X will end and restart without message or warning. Neither XFree86.0.log, XFree86.0.old nor kdm.log indicate any problems other than X catching a signal 11 and aborting. Nothing on the Phoenix/Mozilla bugzilla addresses this issue, and since this is a precompiled binary for Gentoo, I wanted to submit here first. Several different Google searches produced this problem, but the most recent was "bttv v4l videologic captivator". Konquerer did not exhibit this problem. This problem started since upgrading from XFree86-4.2.0 to XFree86-4.3.0. In that time, phoenix-bin-0.5 has been re-emerged with no change. On a side note, I also have problems with, after X has restarted, the keyboard doesn't respond at the kdm greeter. I have to use the mouse to select Menu | Restart X Server, X restarts, and all is good. This is not specific to this problem, though, since I can reproduce it every time I restart or logout of XFree without rebooting the machine. I have also noticed that this problem isn't always specific to KDM. This, however, is less of a show stopper and can be submitted as a separate bug if nobody has a quick solution. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use Phoenix to navigate to http://www.google.com 2. Enter "bttv v4l videologic captivator" in the search box. 3. Actual Results: Phoenix partially renders the page, then the screen goes black as X restarts itself, returning to the KDM greeter. Expected Results: Produced the search results for "bttv v4l videologic captivator". In my experience phoenix has crashed the WM & X and returned to the login manager when performing certain google searches too. However, in my case it were the phoenix nightly builds that were doing it whereas phoenix-bin-0.5 seemed perfectly stable. I found that when I reinstalled with fewer -USE variables these crashes ceased to happen although I don't really which USE variables make the difference. Perhaps, try phoenix-cvs or nightly and see if you can reproduce it with those builds. Also, try a different WM and again try to reproduce it.
Dhruba, I have actually been using the CVS build for some time now, and none of the problems with the binary distribution are occurring. I haven't yet had an opportunity to reinstall the binary version to see if that brings everything back to square one or not. Since another compile of Phoenix would take so long on my machine, in the event that the binary still doesn't work, I'll have to put it off until a weekend. Thanks for your help...
Closing this, as phoenix is gone. If this occurs with mozilla-firebird, please file a bug.
