Trolltech did not release RC1, it is just a Technical Preview, so a version suffix like "_pre1" or "_alpha1" sounds more appropriate to me.
This is the nomenclature I've used in the past. They only release TPs and betas, and as such this seemed appropriate. _pre1 is probably better for the future, but for now it's too much work to change.
What do you plan to do when beta1 will be out? Since _rcX > _betaX, portage won't see the update. However this is not a big problem because I suppose pre-release versions will probably stay masked, won't they? And you can always remove the older versions from the tree...
I'm doubtful there will be a beta. In the past there were just a couple of tps, and in this case I'm guessing just 1 tp. Yeah, in this case, most likely it shouldn't surface as an issue. I should have gone with _pre in hindsight though :) There are some major revisions coming to these ebuilds over the next few hours. Stay tuned.
