Description Tom Lanyon 2007-12-14 23:36:01 UTC
A system with software RAID boot (/dev/md0) and root (/dev/md1) partitions fails to boot. The initrd generated by genkernel creates the /dev/md0 node but not /dev/md1. LVM is also involved, sitting atop /dev/md1.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Gentoo Linux onto software RAID with LVM root
2. Generate initrd with genkernel
3. Instruct grub to boot with initrd

Actual Results:
System doesn't boot; produces error message:
>>Activating Device-Mapper RAID(s)
No RAID disks
>>Determining root device...
!! Block device /dev/vg/root is not a valid root device
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected.

To fix manually, I enter 'shell' a the prompt and then:
# mknod /dev/md1 b 9 1
# mdadm --assemble --scan
# vgscan && vgchange -a y
# exit
Then enter /dev/vg/root at the "boot:" prompt.

Expected Results:
Initrd should create /dev/md1, assemble RAID devices, detect LVM VG, mount root partition and boot cleanly.

Please try the latest version in the tree (3.4.9_pre11)

pre11 is working fine, thanks. Can this be bumped out of ~amd64?
