Comment 4 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-12-08 09:38:37 UTC
vmware-modules-1.0.0.17 (and therefore by extension, vmware-workstation-6.0.{1,2} and vmware-player-2.0.{1,2}) do not support the latest vanilla -rc versions of the kernel. Since this is a closed source product, there's simply nothing we can do until someone produces some compatible code that works with both this version of the kernel and those vmware products. I'll leave the bug open so that we can let you know when it's ready.

In general the latest vanilla -rc kernels are *not* supported by vmware. This will be true of the 2.6.25-rc kernels, and so on...
Comment 5 Preston Crow 2008-01-16 16:33:34 UTC
In googling around on this, I see a number of references to a vmware-any-any patch. If you're really desperate, you might be able to get it to work. I think the main issue is that some function prototypes changed. You can probably edit the vmware sources to correct for this if you can't find a working patch--I hope the necessary changes are limited to the wrappers for their blob. (It's probably a bit much to ask the Gentoo maintainer to get it working with unofficial patches for a -rc kernel.)

Then again, with 2.6.24 likely out for real in a week or so, we can hope that VMWare will put out a real update soon.
Comment 6 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-01-26 01:51:23 UTC
Please try out the recently added vmware-modules-1.0.17-r1. It should be compatible with workstation-6.0.2 and also compile on the 2.6.24 kernel. Please let me know if it works or not so that I can mark this bug as fixed. Thanks... 5:)

Hi,

i have tested building of this module and starting vmware.
It works really fine for me.
Nice work. :-)

best regards Maik
