well, i dunno. I know about these patches, but the springload surely isn't going in with the apple patent looming over it. Snap to grid is useful, but hardly 'needed' . The problem is, as soon as i add a patch like this we need to maintain it for future versions and as long as they're not approved by the nautilus team it is just a gamble and they may still change the whole implementation (or even drop it).

Luckily for you it's pita to patch an ebuild, so people who really want it can do it themselves (same with the shadowhack).

Apple's patent on 'spring-loaded' folders is probably only valid in the us, but unfortunately your undoubtedly right about it never-ever-ever getting included into the nautilus codebase because of that damned patent. Truely a pity because its an awesome feature.

But if you read this thread as Im sure you already have, you will see that "snap to grid" and icon alignment features have been talked about since July of year 2000.

I think that we should at least include the "snap" patch.

It is high time we had this! Finally have a patch! Lets not throw it away!

We loose nothing by including it, and imho saying that we would be responsible to maintain this patch is just plain wrong (maybe I misunderstand you). Patches come and go, but we didnt write it so if it disapears then users will realize that its not our fault. Many application in Gentoo get patches. Kernel? (lame example, but only one that I can think of.)

By including the patch we would be able to help stability test for the nautilus team which would probably help get this included in main nautilus codebase quicker than if we didnt.

Isnt Gentoo about cutting edge? :) ..lame jab at ego.. forgive me..

we do have patches here and there, but mostly they are things sure to go upstream (eg. already in dev version) or are maintained by us directly. And maybe you and i know about the patch, but the general user doesn't and doesn't like feature regression. That said, i certainly think it's interesting. I did read the bug before, i know it's a much wanted option, but we just shouldn't rush in head down when something like a proof of concept patch turns up.

The way things stand I doubt it will make it into 2.2.3.1

If we QA the patch, and make it known that its being used in production then maybe it might happen sooner but the bug report says the target milestone is simply "future" which usualy means.. "couple more years kid"

..but at least the piority is set to "high" but that really doesnt mean a lot.

..pity..

yes i was aware of that, but i think its a whole different patch done by the nautilus people themselves.

well, i've made up my mind. This gridpatch isnt going in either.

In the next stable nautilus i probably will apply the 'official' snap-to-grid patch.
