Why should hal do such things? o_O Which desktop environment are you using?
(In reply to comment #1) > Why should hal do such things? o_O Which desktop environment are you using? > I have explained it in Description: After logout session, DVD volume is still mounted, this prevents next logged users to unmount it due the following error: Error org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy. hal-storage-can-unmount-volumes-mounted-by-others refused uid 1000 For example, under Ubuntu, DVD is unmounted when user logouts preventing this problem I am using gnome, but with KDE, DVD is also left mounted Thanks :-)
Eh, and why's this exactly a hal job, and not gnome-session one?
(In reply to comment #3) > Eh, and why's this exactly a hal job, and not gnome-session one? > I am not a hal expert :-/, but seems that gnome-session is "logouting" properly and no process seems "hanged" after logout. I have also seen that some /media/.hal-mtab* files aren't being removed But this could also be a gnome problem, I don't know Sorry if I can't give you more info, but I don't know much more about this :-(
This actually sounds more like a policy problem than anything else. Anyone logged in on console should be able to unmount DVDs, no matter who mounted them, in my opinion. (well, maybe not if root mounted them...) I'm wouldn't expect my DVD/CD to unmount when I log out. Obviously expectations vary from person to person, but I feel the real falure here is not being able to unmount later. (note: it's not gnome-session's responsibility, no matter what. Nautilus, maybe, but definitely not gnome-session.)

Seems a gnome problem. I have tried again with KDE (maybe yesterday I left DVD mounted by gnome, sorry) and DVD is unmounted when user logs out from KDE session
re comment #6: I expect my removable disks to be mounted when they're in the machine, not just when I'm logged in, that's all.
(In reply to comment #8) > re comment #6: I expect my removable disks to be mounted when they're in the > machine, not just when I'm logged in, that's all. > OK :-)
As Jakub said, HAL doesn't "do" anything, it merely provides a mechanism. The culprits in this mounting haze are g-v-m and nautilus (the latter is clearly taking over the former...) So if anything, a bug should be filed against nautilus. However, this is not a bug, it's just the way nautilus works today. You should open a bug in Gnome's bugzilla to see how auto unmounting could be integrated into nautilus. Thanks
