I just updated a friends old laptop for the first time since 2 years(!) I stumbled upon the exact same problem. Actually, I don't understand why this works for most people. The line that causes the problem comes from files/udev-114-root-link-2.patch, and tries to do: install -c -D write_root_link_rule /var/tmp/portage/udev-115-r1/image//lib/udev/ If I remove the -D, udev installs fine.
