Description Aaron Peterson 2003-04-26 08:45:29 UTC
had some non r1 or 42 kde things emerged
so like a cat with a few lives left, I go and emerge them
I'll attach the tail of my emerge log...
actually I think I had it crash a lot after a particular session with lots and
lots of tabs open and pictures. I was compiling something at the time... and I
thought my system was being slow because of compiling... then I realized that
konqueror was being bad... and then my keyboard and mouse were useless and I
couldn't do anything but reset the computer.

Then I emerged this stuff:
*  kde-base/kdetoys
      Latest version available: 3.1.1
      Latest version installed: 3.1.1
Size of downloaded files: 1,785 kB
      Homepage: http://www.kde.org/
      Description: KDE toys

*  kde-base/kdeutils

      Latest version installed: 3.1.1
Size of downloaded files: 1,340 kB
      Homepage: http://www.kde.org/
      Description: KDE utilities

*  kde-base/kdenetwork
      Latest version available: 3.1.1-r1
      Latest version installed: 3.1.1-r1
Size of downloaded files: 4,846 kB
      Homepage: http://www.kde.org/
Description: KDE network apps: kmail, kppp, knode...

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.have a konqueror session with lots and lots of windows and tabs
2.I have an nivida nforce1 motherboard and an nvidia tnt dualhead (non xinerama)
3.have it crash once..
4 then have it crash every time its started... not just when telling it to make
a new tab in the background

Actual Results:
The system went progressivly slower... once or twice I realized that I had
opened konqueror and ran xkill just fast enough for xkill cursor to start up and
kill the window (this is in the course of a minute my computer was so slow)

and the computer still crashed.

Other details: the screen got garbaged up right before it dies on it's own
accord (if it does) and the nvidia screen flashes (isn't that great... nvidia
puts their logo everywhere and it comes up when the server crashes... any pr is
good pr... (this crash brought to you by, accelerated nvidia drivers!)

This behavior persisted even after I recompiled a few kde parts.

I also just recently switched to gaming-4r2 sources... and did the menuconfig by
my lonesom

I'f I'm arround I'd let someone poke arround my box with supervision (vnc)

The last 350 lines of my emerge.log

note, the first time konqueror crashed hard it took out my rsync ability from
portage... I had to reemerge popt to get it to work (lucilly the error message
said it couldn't load libpopt.o or something like that)

Which version of kdelibs do you have, and are you sure it is not a hd problem or something like that. The crashing of konqueror should never ever cause any library to be removed. Also a longer emerge.log might be useful.

disable the Hardware rending option in your xfree config, is buggy: in section
Device put this line
Option "RenderAccel" "off"
keep us informed
Comment 4 Aaron Peterson 2003-04-30 04:59:18 UTC
Also of note: I have linked gnet with glib2 rather than the default 1.2
I have prelinked the system as well...

I have kdelibs 3.1.1a
when I do emerge kde -s I have the latest stuff (1-51 am april 29 pst rsynced)

I apperantly have installed a new nvidia driver as well (I will try the acceleration off option next).

I have also seen a program running called lscan-worm on my machine... and when I run "ps" I get Bus error (core dumped)

basically, I am synced with ~x86 at any given time... and have hunted down quite a few other files.
**************
sorry for being so lazy, chatty, and appologetic in bug reports

I know konqueror probably didn't cause the wiping out of my ability to run "ps" or "emerge sync"

I've been having a lot of problems with my system recently, and indicated a causual relationship that is probably wrong.
Comment 5 Aaron Peterson 2003-04-30 05:42:16 UTC
Rem: I have xinerama compiled in/ not using cause it broke..
tnt2 vanta and nforce1 mobo

I also unprelinked everything..

Well, adding the renderer-accel =off line to both devices didn't have much effect.

I was able to get to slashdot, and then I was happy that it was working, and opened my email program and clicked on this link... well it died hard again.

There is a lot of hard drive thrashing when it dies.

I thought I had narrowed it down to khtml because the file browser was working, but I used it only briefly.

REM, this behavior STARTED midwiway through a browsing session... NOT on first attempt to load it from a new state.

however... It is possible that I emerged the new kde stuff while using konqueror...

I'm going to do an strace of konqeror for your pleasure once this message is safely sent
Comment 6 Michele Balistreri (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-30 08:43:20 UTC
looking to the new informations this seems more an hardware problem (the bus
error..), check your hardware please, especially your ram and your mobo
Comment 7 Aaron Peterson 2003-04-30 19:33:57 UTC
the bus error is when I run ps

and I have a new kernel...
and this problem started shortly after I put the new kernel in...

pstree works

I've done an strace of ps... I'll include it here just for the heck of it:

I've also recomiled gnet with glib2 instead of glib1.2

and I've been getting problems with text focus staying on my secondary monitor when I move the mouse cursor over to the main monitor and click on a text field.. I start typing and the text stays in the application that i was just using... I have to minimise and restore the window on the main sreen to be able to type in it (this is using kde, dual head, no xinerama, but xinerama is in my use flags)

anywy strace ps yeileds:

aaron@escargot aaron $ strace ps
execve("/bin/ps", ["ps"], [/* 49 vars */]) = 0
old_mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x40007000
mprotect(0x40000000, 21406, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC) = 0
mprotect(0x8048000, 28569, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC) = 0
stat("/etc/ld.so.cache", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=95316, ...}) = 0
open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3
old_mmap(NULL, 95316, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, 3, 0) = 0x40008000
close(3) = 0
stat("/etc/ld.so.preload", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
open("/etc/ld.so.preload", O_RDONLY) = 3
old_mmap(NULL, 1, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE, 3, 0) = 0x40020000
close(3) = 0
--- SIGBUS (Bus error) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGBUS +++

sorry about my spelling... I have bad eyes and can't see my monitor very well... that is also an excuse for poor editing..

ONLY KDE Xinerama khtml, xine when running forever with a dvd menu, are broken on my system (well I haven't gotten scisi emulation to work... and my kernel has all the modules/ I followed the instructions but there is no /dev/hds0 or /dev/scsi anything)

oh, and Kmail doesn't send email reliably (I have postfix as my mail sender)

There are probably multiple problems with my system... but if they are related... there they all are...

I don't really want to check my hardware / memory because stuff works in windows and did very recently with this system. but if you tell me what commands to run for diagnostics, I'll try..

some advice that I've been given:
su
cd /
rm -Rf *

cat /dev/random > /dev/hda1
is something that was also suggested... ;O

I don't think I'll follow those advice...

Have you had any luck getting your system to be happy with itself? :)
Comment 9 Caleb Tennis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-07-07 13:19:28 UTC
Closing due to inactivity - sounds most likely like a hardware problem. If a fresh install of
the latest kdes and qt's don't help, please file a new report.
