During emerge of sys-libs/glibc-2.7 on ~amd64 I get a failure on:

 Did a rerun without the ramdisk just to be sure, same error (but I hadn't checked before...)

Here is the file that generates the error.

Btw the line in question is:
IFS='.>-
'
(. = space, >- = tab)

it isnt a matter of IFS being wrong ... the environment is wrongly being outputted to that file

what sort of crazy customizations do you have for your profile and/or /etc/portage/

None that I know of.

But I did notice one think now that I tried it again, this appeared in /var/log/messages when the error appears:

Might be another bigger issue...
