Description nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-11-14 20:22:05 UTC
As stated, right now there are no links to or from packages.gentoo.org. If users find it, it's only because they've memorized the url.

The packages.g.o page itself needs to have the navstrip/block area across the top that the rest of our website does. It's important to provide a consistent set of navigation so that users don't find themselves in a virtual hole, and then pull it in after themselves. . . . to say nothing of providing the consistent user interface and color scheme that the rest of our website has.

Right now there are no links to or from the website. On the www.gentoo.org front page, there used to be a link off to the left for "online package database" or similar; check CVS for its exact wording when it was removed; I believe it was found in the "Resources" section. Our CSS should still be set up for this nav stuff, assuming we kept it in CVS!

For at least minimal integration:

1) Make sure that a link *to* p.g.o appears in our main templates
2) Make sure p.g.o displays the same horizontal navigation strip that our other pages do, so users have a clean, consistent, easy time browsing through our site. need to be able to navigate to and away; we absolutely *cannot* rely on users having bookmarked each page of our site. Basic common sense.

Actually, there are hundreds of them. Have you ever read a GWN?

Consistency would be nice indeed.
Besides, there's no link back to /
It's common practice to use the logo as a link back to the front page.

It's back and it's got nothing to do with CSS.

The link back to / has been added to the logo. It was previously only at the 'all' link.

Wrt to the navstrip, I'm open to a small version somewhere on the page that does not have the large black space-waste - it isn't always suitable. There are several other sites (bugs, anon, forums) that don't use the same navstrip, and rationalizing all of them would be nice.

Is this bug yet open?
I think you could put the same bar like Gentoo's bugzilla one also on site packages.gentoo.org.

My 2c.

Yep. A bar like http://i57.tinypic.com/a41s0n.png should be very useful

We have a replacement packages site lined up for launch that is no longer affected by this issue. Closing this bug.
