Description Cristi Magherusan 2007-11-07 22:11:47 UTC
Hello,

The Skype developers have soon released a OSS-compatible version of Skype.
Could someone please find a way to make it available in portage too by adding a USE-flag.
The flag should be made available both under x86 and AMD64, even when the qt-static flag is enabled.
The only difference is that the archive has a "-oss" suffix after the version number, and the binary is linked against OSS instead of Alsa.

Cristi

Reproducible: Always

Just thinking of the wrapper script so that the OSS version works with arts or esd makes me shiver. I'm not interested in bringing that back.

I'll leave this open, if there are more requests I'll fix this BUT with no wrapper script. It either works or not.

Hello,

I was wrong. The OSS version is available only as a statically-linked binary, so it's only a matter of checking whether the flag is enabled or not and fetch the right package. Everything else is identical to the static Alsa version. I suppose the static version doesn't need any other work done and should work out of the box.

Currently only the 1.4.x version have a OSS-enabled packages, but I suppose the things won't change in 2.0-beta after it gets built against OSS too.

I did this request only because there are some folks that are using OSSv4 from www.opensound.com and would like to be able to use Skype with it.

+1... never more the wrapper.

Hello,

The wrapper won't be needed at all, because this version won't need to be ran over ESD, Arts or anything else. It would be needed only by those who use OSSv4, which has built-in mixing capabilities, etc.

We could introduce an Alsa USE flag instead of the OSS one, and just see whether it is disabled and then install the OSS version of Skype.

AFAIK the Alsa USE-flag is enabled by default, so no one will ever notice any change, except those who intentionally disable it on their systems like most of the OSSv4 users do.

I really hope I made myself understood.

Cristi.
