Gets as far as Unpacking X30src-2.tgz and then locks completely. Have tried 
deleteting this file from /usr/portage/distfiles and emerging again with no luck

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xfree
2.
3.

Actual Results:  
Complete crash lockup. cannot switch between consoles either.

Have you checked so your disk doesn't become full during the unpack?

cleanup space, maybe a harddisk issue
try turn off dma or do not use hdparm
