I'm using a small box as a router/webserver/ftp server and it also acts as a drop-in replacement for my normal desktop box when it's not working/somewhere on a lan party/etc. I need an Instant Messenger on the box, but it doesn't have the cpu power nor the hard disk space for GTK2. Therefore, I'm stuck with the GTK1 version of gaim but if I want to do a world update, emerge wants to merge the newer GTK2 port (0.60 and up). Maybe the GTK2 port could be moved into a different slot (or the GTK1 version) because I don't feel like renaming the net-im/gaim directory every time I want to do a world upgrade :)
i just tried to do this...its not a workable thing to do... they can't be installed side by side...just put net-im/gaim in your rsync/exclude...
Actually, I'd recommend editing your world file (/var/cache/edb/world) and changing the gaim line to: =net-im/gaim-0.59.9-r1 that will tell emerge not to update it even when it would normally want to.
