If you put the Gentoo Linux CD in, you can install as normal... until you do shutdown -r now When you get back to your BIOS screen, you still can't eject your CD (at least I can't - I have a Compaq model 5838 tower with only a couple of modifications, namely sound and video). This is the same symptom as with the case that the drive has never been unmounted, and you can't get the CD out of there unless you totally power it off, then turn it back on the "hard" way. Only then will you get your CD back. The next part is, in a way, fatal. I tried mounting my Gentoo Linux CD from my installation to get the installation documentation. I restarted, forgetting to unmount my CD drive. I have never been able to get my CD out since (even with trying to pry the CD drive open!!!!!!), no matter how many times I reboot. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Insert Gentoo Linux CD 2. In console, do shutdown -r now 3. Wait, and try to eject CD. Actual Results: CD wouldn't eject, as if mounted still while the OS was off. Expected Results: Unmount the CD as it was shutting down, so I could take it out without having to do a hard reboot.
you have a problematic cdrom drive, there is no way we could build a iso image that should effect your cdrom through reboots like your talking about.
Well, somehow you did. Perhaps you accidentally had an undocumented call in the kernel that would make an AMD Athlon not unmount a CD ROM? Either way, I had to route my IDE into my burner as my primary. I tested the "no unmount" problem with the installer on that CD drive, and the same thing happened: I had to turn it off the hard way. Yes, it is impossible to make an ISO that keeps the CD in there.. but it IS possible to make a call to the BIOS or processor that keeps the CD in there and doesn't unmount until a hard reboot. All I'm saying is try it. Maybe that malfunctioning IDE device thing is my problem. It might just not know how to handle my CD drives/IDE setup...
I'm fairly certain that this is related to the LG CDROM issues that Mandrake was having. I also fried 2 CDROMS with one of the gentoo RC LiveCDs. The software's been fixed. See the LG site for a fix for the dead CDROM. If anyone can reproduce this problem, please reopen this bug.
