Previously cinelerra had worked. 
After "emerge -u world" (which included "emerge -u pnglib) on April 18, 
cinelerra  failed to run.   
Investigating I noted that I could no longer find /usr/lib/libpng.so.2, which cinelerra 1.0 
requires. 
 
I obtained libpng.so.2 on the internet and manually copied  it to /usr/lib 
 
At this point cinelerra functioned again. 
 
Clearly upgrading pnglib broke the cinelerra ebuild.
