there's a forking server that is included in bitlbee called bitlbeed for those people who don't want to run xinetd called bitlbeed. it is in the utils directory. the attach patch compiles this and installs it in /usr/bin also, there are a couple minor fixes such as: - adding IUSE - die's if make or install fails - splitting chown's to pkg_postinst because they'll break if FEATURES="userpriv".
