Description John Whitlock 2007-10-14 22:57:17 UTC
When trying to write an audio CD with app-cdr/k3b-0.12.17 and app-cdr/cdrkit-1.1.6 on a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S183L (serial ATA drive), rev. SB01, it hangs forever on the burn step.

Following the advice at:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Create_an_Audio_CD
I ran cdrecord -scanbus, returning:
scsibus4:
        4,0,0 400) 'TSSTcorp' 'CD/DVDW SH-S183L' 'SB01' Removable CD-ROM
        4,1,0 401) *
        4,2,0 402) *

This agrees with the detected drive under k3b. However, the next command, "cdrecord dev=0,0,0 driveropts=help -checkdrive", returns:

WARNING: the deprecated pseudo SCSI syntax found as device specification.
Support for that may cease in the future versions of wodim. For now,
the device will be mapped to a block device file where possible.
Run "wodim --devices" for details.
Unable to open this SCSI ID. Trying to map to old ATA syntax. This workaround will disappear in the near future. Fix your configuration.Unable to open this SCSI ID. Trying to map to old ATA syntax. This workaround will disappear in the near future. Fix your configuration.Unable to open this SCSI ID. Trying to map to old ATA syntax. This workaround will disappear in the near future...

There is a pause before the "Unable to open this SCSI ID" lines, but they continue forever. I suspect that k3b is performing a similar command.

A similar command, 'cdrecord dev=/dev/sr0 driveropts=help -checkdrive', works:
Device type : Removable CD-ROM
Version : 5
Response Format: 2
Capabilities :
Vendor_info : 'TSSTcorp'
Identification : 'CD/DVDW SH-S183L'
Revision : 'SB01'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.
Driver options:
burnfree Prepare writer to use BURN-Free technology
noburnfree Disable using BURN-Free technology

According to this entry on the k3b blog, cdrkit changed the command line parameters around April 17 2007:
http://k3b.plainblack.com/k3b-news/blog/k3b-blog/some-ranting
You can see the post dates from this view:
http://k3b.plainblack.com/k3b-news/blog

According to http://www.cdrkit.org/, cdrkit-1.1.4 was released around this time. I suspect this might have broke audio CDs.

In any case, upgrading to k3b-1.0.3 fixed the problem, but is still masked for amd64 and x86). I'm willing to downgrade for testing purposes.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S183L, app-cdr/k3b-0.12.17 and app-cdr/cdrkit-1.1.6
2. Burn an audio CD
3.

Actual Results:
CD burning dialog hangs forever

Expected Results:
An audio CD is burned

Well, then it's FIXED. See Bug 180917 for k3b-1.0.x stabilization.
