Description William Keaney 2007-10-14 12:27:34 UTC
Currently, when a user uses the Search page to find bugs, the default value for the Status field is Open.
I think this creates a lot of duplicate bugs. If the search terms would return a bug that has already been closed for some reason, this result is not shown and the user may assume that it is a new bug.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Using the default Search form, look for terms that would return an existing, closed bug
2. No relevant bugs found, user thinks it is a new bug.
3. Duplicate bug submitted.

Seriously, how hard is reading this?!

http://bugs.gentoo.org/
<snip>
When searching for duplicate bugs, closed bugs or using multiple search terms, prefix your entry with 'ALL' (not suffix).
</snip>

The currect default searches for *unresolved* ones, which is *not* the same thing as bugs with 'Open' status. So, there's no easy way to reverse ALL if you set it as default. Not to mention that making it default would generate useless load on bugzilla simple because people tend to search for way too broad things - 'ALL R' as an example, yeah dev-lang/R is a real package.

Yeah, makes sense. I hadn't read that text before, and the idea just kinda occurred to me late at night, browsing through a couple of bugs with a /lot/ of 'Bug XXXX has been marked as a duplicate of this bug' entries.
