while this might not come as a surprise, I'm opening this bug anyway, so that in case anyone ever takes another look at it, he or she also takes a look at this[1].

The important part is

  Note: The linker flag -lcrypt is not supported in Mac OS X.

Apple apparently got postfix to work without any patches[2], albeit with a very obscure makefile[3] - obscure e.g. because of lines like "-I/AppleInternal/Developer/Headers/sasl"...

Resolving as UPSTREAM, users/devs alike can still search for this issue.
