consider adding the following to /etc/modules.d/alsa:

options snd_ac97_codec power_save=1

I don't have anything against adding it, and turning it off by default or commenting it out completely and have a few lines of explanation, but I imagine there might be bugs and it would cause problems turning it on by default.

Why do you want it on?  I'm just worried about stability.
