Description Guy 2003-04-16 07:27:06 UTC
After creating a system using the new 1.4_rc4 stage3 LiveCD iso, I can't log in.

I can boot the new system and it come up with the login prompt. When I enter the
user ID I want to use like 'root' or 'username', I don't get prompted for a
password.

I can boot with the LiveCD and chroot to the new system. I've done this several
times assigning different passwords to both 'root' and several 'username's
accounts I've created.

Also: symbollic links /bin/domainname and /bin/dnsdomainname were missing. I had
to create these links to /bin/hostname myself. (no big deal, but still ...)

I'm not sure what other information to provide. If you could let me know what
else would be helpful, I'll post it as soon as possible.

Reproducible: Always

Resolved the problem to missing 'login' program.

I seem to be missing several programs from /bin after installation from the 1.4_rc4 live iso cd.

/bin/login
/bin/loadkeys
/bin/domainname (symbolic link)
/bin/dnsdomainname (symbolic link)

There appears to be a problem using 'tar' on some machines when extracting the system from 'stage#' tarballs. It could be a problem with the actual tarball itself, but I haven't been able to make the time to confirm one way or another.

I'll be comparing previous installations of /bin to see what else I may be missing as well.
Comment 2 Guy 2003-04-29 22:52:16 UTC
I've confirmed that the tarballs were complete.

There problem appears to stem from files being dropped as they are extracted and the fact there are no clear error messages as to what is happening.

I'm not knowledgable enough to determine where the info is being dropped. Sorry. However, I _think_ that the files are successfully extracted but are simply not always written to the hard drive.

Perhaps the hdparm settings used by the LiveCD are too agressive in some cases.

Oh well.

Unless anyone would like more information or would like me to try something, this bug can be closed.

closing per author's request - sounds like a misconfig of some sorts (perhaps on the gentoo
side, too).

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
