Description Dave Nellans 2003-04-16 01:17:31 UTC
And it came to pass that dnellans questioned gentoo policy on having multiple
ebuilds with the same name but different categories. Having no official policy
set there was some discussion on gentoo-dev with the concensus being...
Official policy should be made as to head this issue off while its still not an
issue (just add it to the ebuild policy page), multiple packages with same names
but different categories should be allowed, portage should be modified so that
when a naming conflict exists no package should be installed rather an error
returned to the user that multiple packages exist and please give
category/ebuild of the package to be used. then the user can specify the one
they want problem solved... the whole reasoning behind this is because when a
user does emerge -s blah if the package they're looking for has been renamed
hlab becuase blah already existed then the user will never find it (ie tbass vs
balsa) and be pissed ;)

email me if there are questions because i'm a huge fan of this idea and recall
it all in much more detail
