Description polytan 2007-09-24 13:34:35 UTC
I'm using suspend2-sources (but I've tried with gentoo-sources too) and since 2.6.21 revision, I've lost the sound. the sound is really really little even at the maximum.

Into my mixers, there is just PCM and not MASTER as before.

I've tryied with 2.6.20 (ok) 2.6.21 (lost) and 2.6.22 (lost)

Reproducible: Always

Actual Results:
no sound (or really little, but not normal at all

Expected Results:
It must work with new versions of the kernel because it had work...

Comment 4 polytan 2007-09-24 14:03:39 UTC
I can see that I've lost a bit of power using my computer.

Did I change a lot of option and my laptop is less powerfull with the last kernel ?

for exemple, the mouse is slower.

suspend2-sources isn't a supported kernel. Can you reproduce this on the latest gentoo-sources-2.6.22 release?

If so, you could get a step ahead and also test the current development kernel, currently v2.6.23-rc7 (vanilla-sources)

I've a server with the same sound chipset. With 2.6.22, no sound. I must use the alsa driver (~x86) in order to have the sound working.

I will try the test on my laptop.

Please reopen when you've had a chance to test on gentoo-sources-2.6.23 and are able to post the results.

I've tried with these sources : gentoo-sources-{2.6.21,2.6.22,2.6.23} suspend2-{2.6.20,2.6.21,2.6.22}.

Currently, I do a complete "make menuconfig" for each my kernel.

With a version >= 2.6.21, I loose performance (at least, the graphical interface is really slow to start and use) and the sound is a nightmare.

Currently, when I have sound, there is just a "PCM" interface and I can't change the sound's volume through it, I must use my physical button. (I can modulate it using the application doing the sound when it is possible as audacious, but not pidgin for example).

With a >= 2.6.22 kernel, I can use the alsa-driver or the in-kernel driver, it is the same result (just "PCM", etc. )

Comment 10 polytan 2007-10-22 16:07:22 UTC
I have to say that I've tried with/without {slub, slab,CFQ} (my default scheduler is "Deadline")
Comment 11 polytan 2007-10-23 07:18:46 UTC
After speking on forums.gentoo.org, it seems that my impressive lost in my performances are because of my hdd not well configured in my .config >= 2.6.21.

Actually, I had to change my fstab and putting in it /dev/by-uuid's id because it is with one kernel /dev/hda and with another /dev/sda.

I don't know what to change in my .config :/

I've found a problem : We can't mix old ide-disk API and PATA API. I've had done it because it seems dangerous to use "EXPERIMENTAL" things.

But it works for my performance.

BUT, I have the same problem for the sound, just a little sound and no control through my mixers.

I try alsa-driver.

With alsa-drivers, I don't have my mixers too, but the sound is audible, look like normal (compared to my 2.6.20 kernel)

Comment 14 Stefan Neben 2007-10-28 18:02:46 UTC
Same problem here (soundvolume very very low) , but for the kernel versions 2.6.22 and 2.6.23. The 21 kernel worked for me. Toshiba P100 with fixed dsdt, inbuild-alsa, intel hda 82801G (Conexant CX20551).
Comment 15 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-10-28 21:02:43 UTC
Stefan, please file a bug for your issue, it's likely to be unrelated.
Comment 16 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-10-29 13:30:09 UTC
polytan, would you be able to test 2.6.24-rc1 please?

If the problem still exists there, please post the contents of /proc/asound/cards and "lspci -v" output from any kernel.

Also, please run "alsamixer" under a working and non-working kernel, and tell us what the "Card" and "Chip" is detected as in each case (it appears in the top left of alsamixer).
Comment 17 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2007-12-19 18:27:20 UTC
polytan,

Please reopen if the problem persists and you have had a chance to perform the tests and attached the requested information from comment #16
