when I try to start abiword-2 (1.1.4) it crashes with the following output:

Fontconfig error: line 1: document is not standalone
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
Fontconfig error: line 1: document is not standalone

No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information

in principle we do not support 1.1.4

do you have a correct fonts.conf configuration file ? does 'fc-list' show anything ?

Do other xft2 enabled apps run (i suppose they do) ?

fonts.conf allright; fc-list returns all fonts; all other xft2 enabled apps work without problems

upgraded fontconfig (I think) and it works now
