We talked about this on IRC. There's no way to pass in variable paths into the tests. They are hardcoded and since you use a different path. "/tmp/portage" then "/var/tmp/portage" it will fail. Additionally, /tmp is mounted as non-executable by default in Gentoo and since tests execute this will typically result in a failure as well.
