I've filed an upstream bug, and they claim it is fixed in 3.5 branch, and they told me to ask for a gentoo dev to update the ebuild.

Note2: I tested it. Upstream resolved this in its SVN repository.

It still compiles and works with QT3/KDE3 despite is from SVN. I am using this snapshot for a few days and I am not having any problem with it.

How will this be handled?

We're going to check for the fix in the KDE subversion repository and add it to our Kopete package.

This is fixed in 3.5.8.
