if 'export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so' is not commented out in /usr/bin/ooffice, 
openoffice fails to load. 
i found this solution in 
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=39831&highlight=openoffice 
this was added to improve performance and font rendering to resolve this bug:

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. upgrade to xfree 4.3. 
2. install openoffice-bin (1.0.2). 
3. bug! 
Actual Results:  
openoffice starts, but the menus dont show anything or show underscores 
 

Expected Results:  
the fonts should show up properly
