Description Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-07 11:15:03 UTC
We would like to become an official Gentto Rsync mirror. We have set up the
mirror according to your HOWTO at cs.ubishops.ca (206.167.194.132), if there are
any problems you can contact me at root@cs.ubishops.ca

Reproducible: Always

Did a check on ::gentoo-portage/metadata/timestamp.chk, which reports
the last sync at 16:59 UTC. This is almost 2 hours ago. Can you verify
that you're syncing every 30 minutes at :00 and :30 intervals?
Comment 2 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-08 14:14:27 UTC
It's definetly running the sync script every 30min, the syslogs can verify that. I am synching aginst rsync2.us.gentoo.org right now, has there been some problem with that server?

It's also possible that the uplink went down for a few hours, they have been havbing a few problems in the past few days.
Comment 3 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-04-08 14:42:28 UTC
I went ahead and added 206.167.194.132 to the access list for rsync1.us.gentoo.org. Please update your rsync cron jobs to point
to that server and post back here when you've done so. We'll
monitor the server for a couple days to make sure things are working
fine and then add it to the main rotation.
Comment 4 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-08 15:20:42 UTC
The cron job is updated, it should be synching to rsync1.us.gentoo.org.
Comment 5 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-04-10 01:01:41 UTC
The syncs were going fine for a while. The left column is when I
ran a check (eastern time) and the right column is the contents of
the timestamp.chk file:

23:55	Thu, 10 Apr 2003 03:00:00 +0000 (expected 0330 UTC)
00:19	Thu, 10 Apr 2003 03:00:00 +0000 (expected 0400 UTC)
00:45	Thu, 10 Apr 2003 03:00:00 +0000 (expected 0430 UTC)

Can you see if there have been any errors reported?
Comment 6 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-10 01:10:39 UTC
yeah, it wasn't syncing right with ibiblio, but I think I have it fixed now.
Comment 7 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-10 01:14:21 UTC
err, sorry i thought was referring to the sources

yeah, its got a few errors in the log:

rsync error: timeout in data send/receive (code 30) at io.c(85)
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (951254 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(165)
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (951254 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(165)
Comment 8 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-10 15:50:33 UTC
I set up the rsync to retry 3 times if it fails, with a 1 minute delay, so hopefully if some network anomalities cause the rsync to fail, it should still properly update.
Comment 9 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-04-14 16:10:26 UTC
The updates seem to be working now, but they are consistantly early.
Usually at 28 past the hour and 58 past the hour (instead of :30 & :00).
Are you running ntp?
Comment 10 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-14 18:59:57 UTC
I'm not running ntp at the moment, I guess it could be clock drift.

Should I set up ntp?
Comment 11 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-04-14 22:39:13 UTC
Please do. Setting up NTP will help ensure syncing happens on time.

Thanks.
Comment 12 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2003-04-15 17:33:23 UTC
Ok, ntp is steup to sync every 6 hours
Comment 13 Kurt Lieber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-16 09:47:05 UTC
This server is now rsync1.ca.gentoo.org and is part of the rsync.namerica.gentoo.org and rsync.ca.gentoo.org rotations. Additionally, I have subscribed root@cs.ubishops.ca to our mirrors mailing list where we announce mirror-related changes and issues.

Thanks for helping to support Gentoo Linux.
