There is a bug in kino 1.1.0 that segfaults the application.  This has been fixed in 1.1.1.  Please add to portage.

Moreover, I cannot even upgrade to kino-1.1.0 as it blocks with ffmpeg.

Martin,
This has nothing to do with Kino, but with the way Portage deals with blockers. You may want to try a more recent version of Portage and/or unmerge and then remerge Kino. Also, please, one issue per bug only.
