which version of gnome-doc-utils are you using ? looks like it's version 0.10 which cause some compilation failures with gnome 2.16 applications. If this is the case then please don't mix unstable and stable gnome

I confirm.
amd x86_64. same error.

downgrading to app-text/gnome-doc-utils-0.8.0,  gnome-base/gnome-applets-2.16.2-r1 compiles fine.

stay downgraded until 2.18.x goes stable.  We can't fix all the 2.16 stuff, since most of it is broken by 0.10
