Using gimp 2.3.18 and 2.3.19 I've had a problem when saving jpeg files. The EXIF data has been deleted and according to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452836 this is because >=gimp-2.3.18 needs libexif-0.6.15. Upgrading libexif solved this problem for me so maybe the libexif dependency should be updated in the gimp ebuilds.
