Description Roman Gruber 2007-07-27 07:13:36 UTC
According to this site: http://gentoo-wiki.com/OpenAL
Openal needs 2 different places for the config file for OpenAL

   1. /etc/openalrc is for system wide setup
   2. ~/.openalrc is for user specfic setup

When I emerge openal none of this files are created!
I have used openal in the past, saw that it doesn*T worked and unemerged it. Now I have asked in the forums and saw that 2) is needed to play e.g. vdrift with openal on amd64. I am an average user and assume if it doesn*T work, that I unmerge it. I can*T know that I only need an additional config file to get it working.

Thanks developers for your work!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge openal
2.doesn*T works because ~/.openalrc is missing
3.cant play vdrift with sound

Expected Results:
I would like to emerge openal and get the config files installed.
So I see them and can configure it right.

I want to have a message at the bottom of emerge to give me a hint, please!!

This is NOT a Gentoo Bugzilla product bug; read the descriptions. Plus we certainly won't he installing anything to $HOME.

Umm... you *don't* need any configuration for openal unless you have some whacked out configuration requirements. I run openal on *tons* of packages and they all work perfectly fine without configuration, so the current setup is correct for most users. Sorry, I don't see that anything needs to be changed here, as we cannot possibly know that your particular system needs configuration while others don't.

Ok, Thanks
