resolved now.
/etc/gshadow was messed up.

Hmm.  Last time I cleaned that file was during the move from lark to stork.

Just out of interest, did you use /usr/sbin/grpck for fixing the file?

One day I noticed that the gshadow file contained : vs , anywhere it had beejay's name. I cleaned that up however. I wonder if there were other cases of : in the file where it should of not been. Was that the case robbat2?

solar: ~20 groups in total had only 3 fields.

pylon: no, I fixed by hand. grpck gives lot of additional output, i'll run thru that later.
