Description Adam Mercer 2003-04-02 17:17:47 UTC
Just a request for serial ata support in future livecds

support for the SIL3112 chipsets is in current 2.4.21-pre kernels
Comment 1 Bob Johnson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-03 18:41:48 UTC
i will be uploading a experimental pre livecd tonight,
it has gs-sources-2.4.21_pre6 as a second kernel. (smp)

this is up if you can test.

I've ordered the board but it hasn't arrived yet - when it does I'll report the outcome.
Comment 4 Adam Mercer 2003-04-07 18:28:02 UTC
Just thought I'd try the new livecd on my current system, when using the smp kernel option (which is the 2.4.21-pre6 version?) I get the following errors - the gentoo kernel works fine!

---- Mounting compressed loopback filesystem
Using /modules/cloop.o
 Segmentation fault
mount: Mounting /dev/cloop on /newroot/mnt/cloop failed: No such devive or address
---- Copying and symlinking files from CD to populate /
cp: etc: No such file or directory
cp: root: No such file or directory
cp: home: No such file or directory
cp: var: No such file or directory
---- Switching to tmpfs root filesystem
exec: chroot: No such file or directory
<0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

gonna cc the cloop person.
lu_zero, this is the error some ppl are reporting with smp cloop.
This same cd/kernel has been tested by others and it works.
Im at a loss.

just to know, is knoppix doing the same thing or not?
Comment 8 Adam Mercer 2003-04-08 17:17:16 UTC
I haven't got a knoppix cd at hand at the moment, I'll get it downloading and let you know
Comment 9 Adam Mercer 2003-04-10 14:18:55 UTC
Just tested with knoppix-3.2-20030330 and it worked fine, along the the rc4 livecd using the gentoo kernel - but I get the same error when using the smp kernel
Comment 10 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2003-04-10 17:37:23 UTC
the knoppix you used was with an smp kernel, isn't it?
Comment 11 Adam Mercer 2003-04-10 18:26:46 UTC
yes, the knoppix kernel does have smp enabled.

My system is not smp though, I was testing the smp kernel on the livecd because I have ordered a motherboard with serial ata support and as the smp kernel is based on a 2.4.21pre kernel which has support for this chipset I wanted to make sure that serial ata would be supported when the time came to install the system

we are definately working on this one....
If its something your interested in, and get bored :)
ive uploaded another cd with different cloop.

That boots fine however the siimage.o module (for serial ata support) is not there, unless its compilied into the kernel - also the board I've ordered has the nForce2 chipset and needs the nvnet.o module which is available in the gentoo kernel.
Comment 14 Adam Mercer 2003-04-13 13:14:54 UTC
Theres been problems getting the board I ordered, so I have changed the order, this board doesn't have a serial ata chipset so I'm not going to be able to do any testing - sorry for the hassle.

this has been long fixed i believe
