In order to get the spawn-fcgi utility, we used to have to emerge the whole lighttpd ebuild. The www-servers/spawn-fcgi ebuild aims at installing the sole spawn-fcgi program, and optionnally the default init script. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Actual Results: Installs spawn-fcgi, the man page and the distribution example PHP process spawning script.

I noted from that old ebuild that spawn-fcgi should better fit in the net-www category, thanks. At least it's now available here in this bug file, even though outside of the official portage tree.
