Description Ryan Nielsen 2003-04-01 14:11:55 UTC
Perl will not emerge. The build quits after a bit with the following output:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried an `emerge -e perl` and an `emerge -e world` and both run into the
same problem. I have `rm -rf /var/cache/edb/deps/*` and `rm -rf /usr/portage/`
to make sure that there's not anything borked in either of those directories. I
have rsync'd numerous times (this problem has persisted for a month or so) and
am now out of ideas.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge [-e] perl
Actual Results:
Fails with the following lines of output:

Processing hints file hints/linux.pl
Writing Makefile for DynaLoader
==> Your Makefile has been rebuilt. <==
==> Please rerun the make command. <==
false
make[1]: *** [Makefile] Error 1

!!! ERROR: dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r10 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 277, Exitcode 2

Expected Results:
Perl 5.8.0-r10 should have emerged into my system.

This computer is a B&W G3 that, before I ran into this perl issue, was
completely up to date (emerge sync is run twice daily and I would update on a
weekly or bi-weekly basis). The only other problems I have had with this gentoo
install have been some kernel issues when I accidentally upgraded to the 2.4.20
series before it was ready for primetime.

I have similar problem on Intel platform - I'm not able to upgrade perl-5.8.0 to r10:

5.8.0-r10 works fine for several ppc devs, is this bug still valid ?
Comment 3 Ryan Nielsen 2003-04-28 11:39:35 UTC
For whatever reason, upgrading to the 2.4.20-ppc-r3 kernel took care of this issue (and a couple of others that had been nagging me as well)... I have not investigated whether downgrading to my old 2.4.19 kernel causes the problems to reappear. I can do this in a week or so (e.g. after my final exams) if needed. Otherwise, close the bug.

maybe your old kernel had a option set that made it somewhat unstable, closing this bug
