Description Philippe Marti 2007-07-18 13:18:52 UTC
When shuting down my Macbook from kde, the screen becomes garbled (black with white dots). It doesn't cleanly shutdown, and reboots. The laptop needs to be powered off before restarting or it hangs before showing grub. It seems the system cannot switch back to console mode on shutdown.

I have an Apple Macbook, with a GMA 950 graphic card. DRI is activated. System has been installed, through bootcamp. I use refit and grub to load gentoo. There doesn't seem to be any problem when the system is running. Only appears on shutdown.

I have xorg-server-1.2.0-r3

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Turn off Computer from the KDE logout menu
2.
3.

I have a similar problem with a Samsung X20 and i915 graphics. I use xorg-server 1.3.0. With 1.7.4 everything is fine.
Comment 5 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-02 00:15:01 UTC
Is this also an issue with the 2.0 driver?
Comment 6 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-02 00:17:25 UTC
Please reopen when you reply.
Comment 7 Philippe Marti 2007-08-02 12:36:58 UTC
The same problem was present with the 2.0 driver. As it is not a systematic error, I can't say if it was more or less frequent.
Comment 8 Alan Hourihane 2007-08-03 10:00:39 UTC
Can you VT switch correctly using CTRL+ALT+F1 to a text console and then back again to X ?
Comment 9 Philippe Marti 2007-08-03 13:22:55 UTC
I can VT switch. Went throught the cyle quite some times. Never got any crash during it. It garbles the screen for a fraction of a second, but then successfully switches to the console.

The only other time when it is not successful is sometimes after recovering from a suspend-to-ram. But I'm not sure that this is the same issue. In fact at this moment the driver keeps reinitialise it self as if it was looking for the right resolution.(the pointer appears for a second on the black/grey screen and then disapears again, and goes throught this until a kill it manually)
Comment 10 Kalidarn 2007-10-19 07:08:28 UTC
had exactly this bug with both XFCE and gnome, it's not desktop environment related.
Comment 11 Kalidarn 2007-10-19 07:13:24 UTC
also the problem only occurs after the 1.7.4 driver, if i hardmask newer versions the problem goes away.

Tried kernels 2.6.20, 2.6.21, and 2.6.22 as each one went stable.

Also tried disabling framebuffering, still occurs.
Comment 12 Malte S. 2007-10-29 12:38:58 UTC
Same Problem here, VT switching works without a problem, but somehow every fifth shutdown / reboot the system freezes with a mess on the screen. only unplugging power supply helps to get it on again. I'm working with a Samsung X20, too.

Should I switch back to the 1.7.* version of the driver ? Afaik there were no problems, though i would miss the xrandr features of the 2.* version :-/

I have a Toshiba A6 Tecra. I've been meaning to try a "Standard" resolution ie not 1280x768, can anyone confirm it occurs with a 1024x768 resolution?

I've just added a snapshot of the upcoming 2.2.1 release, as upstream wants more testing before making official releases.

Please try this snapshot. If it isn't fixed, please open a bug in freedesktop's bugzilla [1] and paste the url here.

Thanks

Using x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810-2.2.0.90 I don't get it anymore when shutting down, x11-base/xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3 without the hal flag

Infact I never get it now shutting down. But rather occasionally whenever I use my computer, sometimes a week or two or more, then bang it occurs. The reason I'd like to get this resolved is because it makes linux look very unstable, ie it's as bad as a BSOD in windows and that would annoy me greatly. Apart from having to scan my filesystems on the next boot.

Alright, I'll close this fixed, but if you are able to reproduce the bug with a set of things you were doing at the time it crashed, please reopen.

You might want to look out for DPMS blanking when using XVideo or DRI. I've seen this crash X or the entire system a few times.

Thanks for the update
