No matter which charset I select, writing special characters (german) always results in charset=us-ascii 7 bit. It's only on ppc, can't reproduce on x86 (same KNode, kdebase, kdelibs, same Gentoo).
We need your emerge --info for the system you are having trouble with. It would be great if you could test this on KDE 3.5.7 and see if it is an issue there too as this is due to go stable shortly.

On 3.5.7 still the same issue. Message-ID: <1449785.ZMlAvYkXZ9@burcheri.albasani.net>
Google doesn't find that message ID. Can you give us a link? Bringing in ppc as well because I can't test on that platform. Do you have any ideas, guys?
Sure it does. You did something wrong on your search (delete the "<>" braces of course). Here's the URL: http://groups.google.de/group/alt.test/msg/b53ce9ea5baf49ca (but I don't think it helps, it just shows the wrong encoding).
Please file an upstream bug on bugs.kde.org for this and post its URL here.
I've continued a quite old bug report some time ago: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42576#c5 Now I see it hasn't been reopened. I'm going to open another one... https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=149465
Thanks, please re-open this bug report when there's progress on the upstream bug that would allow us to fix the problem in Gentoo.
