When I try to startx with the nvidia-driver the screen leaves black and the system is freezing. The same with the vanilla-kernel works fine. It's an Nforce2 board (epox) and I've testet this also with agp-support turned off (nvagp="0") Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Load Nvidia driver 2. startx 3. freezing Portage 2.0.47-r10 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.2, glibc-2.3.2-r0) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.20 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) processor GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.linux.no/pub/gentoo" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" USE="x86 oss 3dnow apm avi crypt encode gif jpeg libg++ mikmod mmx mpeg ncurses pdflib png quicktime spell truetype xml2 xmms xv zlib gdbm berkdb slang readline arts tetex bonobo svga tcltk java guile sdl gpm tcpd pam libwww ssl perl python esd imlib oggvorbis gtk qt motif opengl mozilla gphoto2 cdr scanner cups X -gnome alsa nls kde" COMPILER="gcc3" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math" CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" MAKEOPTS="-j2" AUTOCLEAN="yes" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" FEATURES="sandbox ccache"
I have the same problem with the gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r2 and gs-sources 2.4.21_pre6 (in the 2 cases, the MTRR options is set whereas in my previous 2.4.19 kernel, this option wasn't set). I've tried the 3123 and 4191 drivers. I haven't tried to use a recent kernel without the MTRR option and the 3123 driver (the last NVidia driver needs the MTRR option).
My graphic card : nVidia Corporation NV15 DDR (GeForce2 GTS) (rev 164). Maybe just a hint... I had the same problems with gentoo-sources-2.4.20 (gentoo-r3 .. r5) I recognized grsecurity violations in /var/log/kernel/current May 10 10:45:17 [kernel] PAX: terminating task: /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86(X):17219, uid/euid: 0/0, EIP: 0824E520, ESP: 5FBB903C May 10 10:45:20 [kernel] PAX: terminating task: /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86(X):10369, uid/euid: 0/0, EIP: 0824E520, ESP: 5F8AC3FC With grsecurity medium level, everything works fine...
I have the same problem with gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r5 and Nvidia 4800 .. but I have turned grsecurity totally off. And my machine frezed when I lock out of x.
could it be that gcc 3.2.3 with propolice somehow does not like the nvidia driver ? is there someway to turn off propolice ?
it is kernel related, not gcc i use gcc-3.2.3 w/nvidia-kernel and i've never had problems ... as for the grsec thing, thats kind of your own fault for not reading into the documentation/warnings posted about grsec+desktop use :)
I've the same problem here. Not the gentoo-sources nor the gaming-sources packages seems to be liked by the nvidia driver. And again, no problem when starting xfree on a vanilla-kernel. Maybe there's a way to manually apply only some of the patches coming with the gentoo-sources in order to test if one of them is the cause ?
Still an issue on gentoo-sources-2.4.22?
We really need some more information about this bug with the newest versions of the nvidia-kernel and the newer kernels. Could someone please update...
