Description niogic 2007-07-05 01:26:57 UTC
So, since automake-1.10 is the default, it would install automake-1.9* in another slot.

I've manually changed the dependency and re-digested the ebuild.
Then "emerge coreutils" just emerged fine ..

no real information here as to what the problem is you're experiencing

post `emerge --info` and actual build errors

It's not really a problem, just redundant to install another version of automake in another slot, if it isn't needed.. I don't know why coreutils depends on automake-1.9* : I don't know if automake-1.10* fails in some cases.
For me automake-1.10* worked fine.

please be a little more clear in your bug report next time:
coreutils-6.9-r1 has =automake-1.9 in DEPEND even though it will build with automake-1.10+
