When upgrading wpa_supplicant to 0.5.8, the wireless in this notebook won't associate any longer. First I suspected the ipw2200 driver to be the one responsible for the breakage, but after downgrading to wpa_supplicant-0.5.7 everything works perfectly fine again.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20/+bug/103497 Does running `rmmod ipw2200` fix it for you?
Still valid with 1.0-r2?
