A complete build log is located at > '/dstore/tmp/portage/media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14/temp/build.log'. media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14 compiles here .. could you please attach your kernel .config and the full build.log ?
Created attachment 124175 [details] Kernel config file for 2.6.20-gentoo-r8
Created attachment 124177 [details] build log file for alsa-driver-1.0.14
Kernel config file and build log are attached.
Simon, you're sure your kernel sources are alright (as in merged and not damaged in any way); as I just unpacked a fresh tarball, compiled gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8 with your kernel config and afterwards keyworded alsa-headers/alsa-driver and compiled them with your USE and it went through without any problems ..
Here is why the problem exists: checking for saved_config_space in pci_dev... no This should be 'yes' for 2.6.20. For some reason, that configure check is producing the wrong results. I'm not really surprised that out-of-kernel build hacks like that fail once in a while. Because the above check results in 'no', the check for the pci_save_state() API is skipped, the old API is assumed, and we get the compile error. Simon, posting config.log may be useful here. alsa-driver isn't very actively maintained (this might not be fixed soon) so you might consider switching to the in-kernel drivers.

Is it for alsa-driver or for gentoo-2.6.20-r8 source? The reason I need to use out of kernel driver is that alsa-driver-1.0.14 fixed hda-intel problem so I can use both headset and microphone. What version of alsa-driver is included in gentoo-2.6.20-r8? How should I check? alsa-driver-1.0.14-rc3 compiled fine with gentoo-2.6.20-r8. So I do expect upgrading from rc3 to final release would cause any problem. Simon
alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc2-r1 built fine here, until i installed and compiled gentoo-sources-2.6.21-r4. it seems like this new kernel doesn't support alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc2-r1, so i guess some version bump is needed
Just a note: I experienced the same error when trying to compile under gentoo-sources-2.6.21-r4. I wanted to report that alsa-driver-9999 (which fetches the current dev source repository) *does* compile correctly. The autoconf does indeed say "checking for saved_config_space in pci_dev... yes". So, this should be fixed in the next upstream release.
