Description Alex Barker 2007-06-21 22:32:05 UTC
The attached afasnmpd-bin-2.7.1.ebuild provides a method of installing the
afasnmpd daemon that allows ssmp info to be retrieved from the Adaptec
RAID controller that Dell uses as their PERC 3Di.

Depnds: net-snmp and possible 64bit compatibility libs for x86.

Package suggestion: sys-fs/afasnmpd-bin

afasnmpd daemon for Dell's PERC 3Di raid controler.

This ebuild runs, but the functionality and stability of the program has not been tested.

Thoughts:

The issue with this application is that who ever wrote it is using the kde/arts sound libs for god knows what reason. I have no idea why a server would need kde or arts as ours doesn't have a sound card. Insted of requiring arts and kde and xorg and another 50 packages that i didn't have installed, I hacked the ebuild to load the libartsc.so library from some binary packages for kde via gentoo mirror.

Additional HACK for this gem: The program requires libcrypto.so.1 and libssl.so.1. I was unable to located these libraries on gentoo so they are linked to the 0.9.8 versions. This is very very dirty, but the programs will run.

OK. I know that nobody picked up on this package, but I have a newer ebuild which I had written and am using in production at work.

I'll attach the ebuild here, but you can find it via my Git repo:

net-analyzer/afasnmp/afasnmp-4.0.ebuild

This is the ebuild for 4.0, which is the latest version. It works on both x86 and amd64, and renames the MIB to match the contents.

net-analyzer/afasnmp/files/afasnmpd.rc

This is the init script, needed to start the daemon properly.

netmon team: I am reassigning this bug to you guys in hope that you'll pick it up for inclusion in the tree. If you're not interested, shoot it back to maintainer-wanted and we'll just have to drum up a maintainer. Of course, I can't imagine that somebody out there doesn't have a Dell (or anything else, really) using an Adaptec AACRAID-based controller.

The [URL] gives me a 404. :-(
Comment 7 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-08-30 05:28:21 UTC
That seems to do it...

Well, I don't have such hardware, so ... reassigning.

But this package could be useful so I suggest (Alex or may be you Chris) to commit and maintain this package in sunrise overlay. If you agree that this is a good idea, please, don't hesitate to contact me personally by mail or whatever you prefer or us at #gentoo-sunrise irc channel in Freenode network.

Thanks for you interest and work anyway.
Comment 9 Chris Gianelloni 2008-09-04 18:04:52 UTC
Sorry, but I'm not on Freenode, nor do I plan on ever joining it, again. I'm already maintaining this package in my own overlay, so I'm not interested in maintaining it in Sunrise, also.

This is a simple ebuild for one of the most common hardware platforms in the enterprise. Hell, the ebuild/daemon/etc work even if you don't own the hardware, so it isn't like you guys cannot test the ebuild's functionality, which is all that you're required to support, anyway. The package contents itself is maintained by Adaptec/Dell. I'm not really sure how not having the hardware yourself is a good enough reason to keep this from being included in the tree, as it is essential for properly monitoring Dell servers over the network.

I have a *ton* more of this stuff. If the common answer is going to consistently be that the package won't be added due to lack of supported hardware by the members of the netmon team, please let me know so I can quit wasting my time posting ebuilds/bugs here. It doesn't do me any good if they're not going to be included. I maintain all of this stuff, already, so I don't need it, at all. I'm doing this as a courtesy to Gentoo and it's users.

Thanks

Apologies if that sounded rude, I did not mean it as such. I am just wondering if the netmon team is interested in these packages. As I've said, I have no interest in contributing to Sunrise, only the main tree. I already maintain an overlay.

> I am just wondering if the netmon team is interested in these packages.

Yes, personally I am.

> I already maintain an overlay.

Great, but then can I mention you as maintainer in metadata.xml so you'll be notified about bugs too, and if bugs require hardware access to be fixed we'll ask you for help?

Comment 12 Chris Gianelloni 2008-09-19 20:05:54 UTC
Absolutely. I have several machines with this hardware and can do testing and maintenance on the package, since I was going to have to maintain it, myself, if it isn't accepted, anyway.
