After a recent emerge -uD world of my laptop, the system refused to shutdown correctly. The shutdown process was stopped somewhere in between, mostly after "Killing processes using ALSA" or "Unmounting network filesystems". I then tried terminating most of the the services manually before a shutdown - no problems. Through trial and error, I found out that the system always hangs during shutdown unless I stop autofs manually during shutdown. Will be happy to provide more info - just tell me what you need...
emerge --info please.

New maintainer, net-fs/autofs-5.0.3-r1 is now in the tree.
I added "--enable-ignore-busy" to the configure parameters for autofs-5. I did this to prevent the shutting down of autofs hanging at system reboot/shutdown. Could you please try if this fixes the same problem you are talking about, and provide feedback? Thanks
No feedback in well over a month, closing bug.
